One of the most common questions I get from clients..."what the heck do I wear and I how do I coordinate outfits?!" So if you're here wondering the same thing, you're not alone. I've put together a quick list of tips for ya, and honestly I've always turned to pinterest for all of my photo outfit inspiration--so that's always a good place to scroll for ideas, here's my couples outfit board and family outfit board in case you like pinterest as much as me!
my outfit planning advice:
- My BIGGEST piece of advice, like if you stop reading right now at least take this one tip: WEAR SOMETHING YOU FEEL AMAZING IN! You know, that outfit that you put on and you look in the mirror and immediately think "daaaammmnnn." That outfit that makes you want to put on music and freaking dance. That's how you should feel in your outfit. If you find yourself tugging at the outfit, pulling it down/up/etc--it ain't the one. If it's sticking to you like a stage 5 clinger...it ain't the one. Got it?
- Coordinate! Meaning your outfits don't clash AND don't match. You feel me? Your outfits should just compliment each other and maybe follow a color scheme. Key ideas--if one person has a pattern, the other person doesn't, if you're wearing a gorgeous flowy dress--make sure their outfit isn't a t-shirt and shorts (button up and dress shorts, yes!). It's usually best to choose your outfit first and plan the other(s) around it. Don't think too hard about it, you got this.
- Comfort...I'm not saying you should wear your fav sweats and sneakers, but movement is a big part of our session--walking, dancing, maybe siting on the ground? I still encourage you to wear that dress that makes you feel amazing, as long as you can move in it, that's all!
- Let's talk about colors...neutral, earthy tones that's always my suggestion. Loud, bright, neon, graphics and logos--usually don't look awesome in photos honestly. Think greens, cream, beige, tan, dusty blue, mustard yellow, white, burnt/rust orange, gray...you got this.
- Lay out your outfits on the bed/floor next to each other. This is how I plan for my own photos. I grab the outfits I'm considering (shoes too!) and lay them out, that way I can switch out what I want and see how it looks without making anyone change clothes! (While you are doing this, feel free to send me a picture if you want a second set of eyes to look it over--I love planning outfits together!) Also, this means = PLAN AHEAD. Like days...maybe weeks ahead of time. Not the night before, don't do that to yourself (speaking from experience lol).
Cori & Jason
They crushed the neutral earthy tones (they also both had vans sneakers on which was unique to them and super freakin cute).
Alycia & Cam
Showing off the cream/white look. Alycia wore a flowy textured top that adds so much to the overall look of the photos
Courtney & Ryan
She has a white top and Ryan's button up has some coordinating white dots that give the outfit some texture! Also don't be afraid to throw on a piece like this gorgeous coat that she brought with and decided when to throw it on and when to take it off.
Morgan & Shiloh
The ONLY time I think matching is cute is when it is Mommy & Me matching dresses....then 100% love it!
Burg Newborn Session
This is the definition of creamy neutral goodness. Mom and dad have on textured creamy knits of different shades. Newborn babe has on the only "color" and sister's outfit is a creamy color with a pattern including the color of baby brother's outfit. So sweet and perfect.
Last but not least...family outfits
Their color theme was those beautiful soft/dusty blues, whites, and gray. AND it worked so dang well. (I chose this picture to show the outfits, it is actually from one of my earliest sessions with my old camera body and lens, that's why the quality doesn't match the rest.)
